A frenum is a small piece of tissue that connects your upper lip to your gums. Sometimes this tissue is thicker or positioned too low, creating a noticeable gap between your front two teeth and pulling the gum tissue away from the teeth. A frenectomy is a simple procedure where we remove or loosen this tissue to close the gap and improve your smile.
The procedure is quick—usually taking just 15-20 minutes—and is performed with local anesthesia. We make a small incision in the frenum, remove the excess tissue, and allow it to heal. There are no stitches, and most patients feel little to no discomfort.
A frenectomy can be done purely for cosmetic reasons to close an unwanted gap, or it may be recommended if the frenum is pulling gum tissue and affecting tooth support. After healing, which takes about 1-2 weeks, you'll see your smile transformation and the gap between your front teeth will be closed.
